In the final video of this series, Roger E. McCarthy, the co-creator of the top-secret Tibetan Task Force (code-named STCIRCUS) is introduced. In the spring of 1957, he trained the first Tibetan team, which was secretly escorted out of Darjeeling, then to East Pakistan on foot, then flown to Okinawa in a blacked-out plane, and finally flown to the island of Saipan.
Several years later, McCarthy established the Tibetan training site at Camp Hale, Colorado.
During my seven-year-research for my book Buddha’s Warriors, McCarthy became my friend, then mentor, and finally my surrogate father. In 1999, we traveled together – along with his son Kevin – where we were granted a filmed interview with His Holiness the Dalai Lama at his residence. We also traveled to Tibetan refugee settlements – both in India and Nepal – where he was reunited with the long-ago Tibetan resistance fighters, whom he had grown to regard as old friends.
The video includes excerpts from his 1998 presentation at Toronto University, as well a panel discussion for Stanford University in 2006 called "CIA and the Secret War in Tibet", where he and I were among other panelists Bruce Walker, Ken Knaus andTenzin Tethong.
